Back to work
Here I am at the end of a long hard week, in which I received my first wage packet in over 4 years.
I have had a BALL.
It
is a little intimidating, however, to start up again at my age, but it
isn't impossible. I get up at 6.00 am anyhow, so I continue to do so,
and then do a bit around the house before I go to work.
I can
get any number of buses to this hospital, which is central, and I work
for one of three consultants in Respiratory. This means I share an
office with two other girls, who work for the other two consultants. I
have really fallen on my feet in this, my first temp post, as these two
girls are very friendly and we all get along fine. I don't care how
much work there is to do, and there is plenty, as my work mates are
great.
The
hours are flexible too, and as long as I do eight a day, I can start
more or less when I choose, so I start at about 8.15 am and work
through till 16.15 pm. I remember being a severely asthmatic child and
to type up these letters reminds me of the ailments I had as a child,
which does move me quite a lot.
The job is for a few months
whilst they replace a girl who moved to another office, having wanted a
change after 10 years of being in the department.
I was really pleased to be back in the job market and get a placement so quickly.![]()
I
think it goes to show that even at my age you can start again. I am the
office junior and starting at the bottom, but I am happy with that.
Life begins at 53!

Back to work
I went into town and was at the hospital in plenty of time. It is easy enough to get to so there was no problem.
I
work in a little office with two other girls, and we transcribe for a
team of paediatric respiratory doctors, all day. We can start when we
want, and finish when we want, as long as we clock in and out, and we
get a half hour for lunch.
I like Audio work, I find it easier
than the reading of transcripts, and I am doing fine getting used to
their voices. The girls I work with are called Jenny and Jill, and they
have even put my name on the door....! I have arrived.
I met all
the doctors too, and the department head (Julie) is really nice, took
the time to show me around and help me get my ID badge sorted.
Thank goodness to be so quickly back at work! I was tired and happy when I got home, having managed a whole clinic's work.
Grant
and I are working out a division of labour plan for cooking and the
like and we are going to hire a cleaner, to come weekly. My hairdresser
knows a woman who works in the area and I am going to get the number
off her.
current mood:
jubilant
I've got a JOB!!
End of Term
Well, Semester, for my American friends!
Since
we do need the money, I have spoken to the Admin head and asked for the
part time teaching job to be postponed a year, and she is agreeable for
that. I can still do the teaching diploma next year too, and this
decision means I can take all the temp work on offer and help us out.
Up until the last few years, I always worked to support myself and I am
looking forward to this again.
I have decided to do the ILEX
course. This is a course for Legal Secretaries, and can be done on a
part time basis, on a Tuesday and Wednesday evening, will give me
another string to my bow. It will involve the same tutors for the IT
stuff, and I have had a fabulous year here anyhow.
I have made some lovely friends, some of them tutors, and I will treasure the memories. Now it is time to keep going forward.
current mood:
hopeful
